Five physical elements viz. water, fire, earth, gold and wood form
the basis of Feng Shui. If the relative proportion of these elements
is correct, the occupant of the house leads a happy life or he will
have to suffer from scores of problems.
According to the beliefs of Feng Shui, these five elements depend
upon the time of one's birth. If, for example, a person is born
at 3 p.m. in the afternoon, he or she will have water as the most
favorable element. Such a person should begin the construction of
his/her home from the west or south-west. The following table gives
a brief profile of these elements.

WORSHIP OF VAASTU
VAASTU PUJAM PRAKURVIT GRIHARAMBHE
PRAVESHANE CHA|
Before you start the construction of your home, first of all, the
land should be worshipped and then the digging for foundation should
be carried out. When the house is ready you should formally worship
Ganapati (Lord Ganesh), Punyah Vachan, Matrika, Vaishvadev, VAASTU
Kundal Navgrah. You should spend tenth part of the cost of the house
in VAASTU Pujan (worship of VAASTU). It is clearly mentioned in
Vishwakarma Prakash:
ASHRIYAM MRITYUMAPNOTI VIGHN TASYA PADE PADE|
VAASTU PUJAM AKURVANAM TAVAHARO BHAVISYATI||
That is, those who do not worship VAASTU because of the fears of
over spending, infidelity or lethargy, lose their wealth and luxury,
meet obstacle at every step and fall prey to untimely death. Such
people have to bear the anger of VAASTU Purush as a result. Hence,
every prudent person should worship VAASTU Purush without fail.
There are provisions of installing different kinds of VAASTU Peethas
(platforms) for worshipping VAASTU Purush.
Only the carpet area of the plot is considered to install the platform
for VAASTU worship. Thus, VAASTU with one to one thousand steps
is worshipped. For common households, worships of VAASTU with eighty-one
steps are most prevalent. For the temples, royal palaces, villages
etc. VAASTU with sixty-four steps is worshipped.
EKASHITI PADAMVAASTU GRIH KARMANI SHASYATE|
CHATUHSHASHTHI PADAM VAASTU PRASADE DEV BHUMUJAM|| WORSHIP OF VAASTU
One day before the actual worship, purify your body by observing
penance (in the form of fast and other restraints). Next day, before
the actual worship starts, take bath and practice Pranaayam. The
Brahmins in the mean time should recite the scriptures to sanctify
the ambience. Thereafter bow your head before Lord Ganesh and other
deities and make resolution with following hymn:
OM AGYA, AMUK MASE (Month's name), AMUK PAKSHE (Name of the
lunar phase), AMUK TITHIYE (date) AMUK VASARE (day), AMUK NAMADHEYO
(your name) YAGYAMANOHAM SAPATNI SAPUTRA, SAPARIVAROAHAM MAM. SARV

Recitation of the above hymn should be followed by Digrakshan (protection
of the direction), Kalash Pujan (worship or Urn), Deep Pujan (worship
of lamp), Ganpati Pujan (Worship of Lord Ganesh), Punyah Vachan
(recitation of holy hymns), Shodash Matrika Pujan (Worship of sixteen
deities), Vaishvadev Sankalp (resolution to make offerings), Ayushya
Mantrajap (recitation of hymn for long lide), Nandi Shradh, Brahmin
Varan etc.
SHALA KARMA
At the centre of the plot, measure as much land as you can with
the diagonal expansion of your hand from the tip of the thumb and
tip of the little finger. Make an altar on this piece of land and
light the fire in it. Then pouring pure ghee on fire, recite the
following hymn:
OM ACHYUTAY BHAUMAYA SWAHA
IDAM ACHYUTAYA BHAUMAYA NAMAM|
While reciting this hymn, sprinkle ghee on each of the pillar and
recite
OM STAMBHAYA NAMAH|
At the centre of the plot then build an altar that is one cubit
in size and install the platform of VAASTU deity with eighty-one
steps on the south-western corner of the altar. With five Bhusanskaras
(Consecrations devoted to land) light fire in the altar.
INSTALLATION OF VAASTU DEITY
After making VAASTU Platform with eight-one steps take some water
in hand and make resolution:
ADYETYADI PRARABDHASYA KARMANAH SANGATA SIDDHAYARTHAM
VAASTU MANDALE DEVATNAM STHAPANAM PUJANAM ACHANAM KARISHYE |
Then install four small pillars on the four corners of the VAASTU
Peeth one in each corner.
VISHANTU BHUTALE NAGALOKAPALASHCH SARVATAH |
ASMIN GRIHEAVATI SHTHANTAM AYURBALAKARAH SADA ||
With this hymn, twist the sacred thread into double and tie it
around the pillars. Then starting from the fire angle (south-east
corner) make oblation of urad dal and cooked rice near each pillar
with the following hymns in sequence:
AGNIBHYOAPYATH SAROEBHYO YE CHANYE TAN SAMASHRITAH
BAHIM TEBHYAH PRAYACHCHHAMI PUNYMODANAMUTTAMAM|
AGNAYE IMAM BALIM SAMARPAYAM||1

RUDREBHYASHCHAIV SARPEBHYO YE
CHANYE TAN SAMASHRITA|
BALIM TEBHYAH | ISHAANAM IMAM
BALIM SAMARPAYAMI|| ..4
Then, with the help of a gold or silver pin, draw ten lines along
east-west axis and invoke their deities with the following hymn
SHANTAYAI NAMAH| YASHOVATYANI NAMAH| KANTAYAI
NAMAH| VISHALAYAI NAMAH| PRANAVAHINYAI NAMAH| SATYAI NAMAH| SUMATYAI
NAMAH| NANDAYAI NAMAH| SUBHADRAYAI NAMAH| SURATHAYAI NAMAH|
Similarly draw ten lines along north-south axis and invoke their
respective deities:
HIRANYAYAI NAHAM| SUVRATAYAI NAMAH| LAKSHMYAI
NAMAH| VIBHUTYAI NAMAH| VIMALAYAI NAMAH| PRIYAYAI NAMAH| JAYAYAI
NAMAH| JWALAYAI NAMAH| VISHOKAYAI NAMAH| IDAYAI NAMAH| and REKHA
DEVATABHYO NAMAH
Thus you have invoked all the deities representing the lines.
Now its time to invoke all the deities present in VAASTU Mandala
(VAASTU's sphere) with the following hymns:
1) Shikhine Namah Shikhin Avahaymistha payami. 2) Parjanyay Namah,
3) Jayantay Namah, 4) Kulishayudhay Namah, 5) Suryay Namah, 6) Satyay

After invoking all these deities worships all of them with all
your might reciting the hymn: VAASTUMANDAL DEVABHYO NAMAH
Then worship the personified idol of VAASTU. Construction of the
house can be started now. When the construction is over and the
house ready to live in, rituals have to performed again before actually
shifting into your new home. After worshipping the main gate, enter
the house and keep the urn you are carrying in the north-eastern
corner of the kitchen. Then carry out a Havan in your house to please
all the nine planets. Starting from east, tie the sacred thread
around your house and sprinkle water mixed with milk everywhere
in the house. Then dig a pit in the south-eastern corner of your
plot and put the urn and the idol of VAASTU in it and fill the pit
again with water and soil. Arrange a feast for Brahmins and before
they leave, sufficient donations and gifts should be given to them.

APPENDIX
Since birth, food, clothing and shelter are the basic necessities
of a human being. In remote past, humans started the journey of
their life very much like wild animals. But with increasing understanding
of the environment, humans continue to walk on the path of progress.
With continuous efforts our learned sages revealed many secrets
of nature. But the curiosity of man was never quenched. It is curiosity
that led to so many fascinating discoveries and inventions. Necessity
has of course, been a prime motivation behind man's progress.
In the entire universe, only the solar system has significance
for our existence. Life, as it is known to us is found only on the
earth, the mother of all of us. Our earth goes round the Sun, sole
source of energy for life on earth.
Great Indian sages conceptualized all the four Vedas and the role
these could play in the well-being of human race. With time, Vedas
came to become an integral part of our life style. Then our sages
created VAASTU Shastra to make the immediate ambience of man favourably
to him.
Literally, VAASTU means house or building. Our house should be
such that we may pass our life in it with comfort and peace.
In this regard Atharvaveda says:
HAVIRDHAMAGNI SHALAMPATNINAM SADANAM SADAH |
SADO DEVANAMASI DEVI SHALE ||
That is a house must be as pious as the place of Yagya. There should
be a proper place in a house for the women folk, where their chastity
could remain unspoiled. It should also have a proper place for the
men folk where they could stay, meet and treat the guests. Similarly,
there should be separate rooms for bath, dining, meditating etc.
also.
Yajurved said: KIN VA VAPAN MAHAT Which place is bigger? Where
should house be built?
This is answered in the next hymn: BHUMIRAVAPANAMMAHAT
Land is the place to put solid, tangible things and it is also the
large field to sow every kind of seeds and to construct every kind
of building.
The basic principle of VAASTU is to adopt the macro and micro effects
of nature and train them in favour of human being. Thus, every kind
of construction must be done in such a way, as it may prove helpful
in physical, mental and spiritual development of humans. A human
body is a conglomerate of endless energies. VAASTU helps to channelise
these energies.
A human body is also composed of five physical elements. A slight
disturbance in the proportion of these elements may adversely affect
the human being. VAASTU Shastra gives a detailed thought to this
balance of five elements and suggests ways to carry out construction
in such a way as not to disturb the proportion of these elements.
Following table gives an account of these five elements and their
effects:

VAASTU AS A MEANS TO ACHIEVE SALVATION
Father of VAASTU Shastra, Vishwakarma says:
CHATURVAG PHAL PRAPTIH SALOKASHCH BHAVED DHRUVAM|
SHILP SHASTRA PARIGYANA NYARTYEAPI SURTAM VRAJET||
From the complete knowledge of VAASTU (architecture), human being
achieves Dharma, Arth, Kama, and Moksha. Their lives are a success
on earth and after death they find a place amidst the deities and
are worshipped by the people.
An architect, trained in western type of architecture, can guide
you to build a house. But he can't guarantee you for a peaceful
stay in the house. But VAASTU Shastra does give such a guarantee.
All around the world, house building is regarded as a mundane job.
But in India, it is a religious activity; a means to achieve salvation.
Unless and until we don't understand the religious logic behind
house building, we can't understand the principles of VAASTU as
well. A house minus VAASTU is no more than a heap of rubble. Let
us now see how a good house helps us to achieve salvation.
DHARMA: Inhabitants of a house must get
spiritual peace. It is even necessary to salve a man from the tortures
of physical and spiritual pains. There should be no feeling of envy
or dispute among the family members. In ancient times, even the
most violent animals used to give up their nature in the ambience
of hermitage. This is a dynamic example of VAASTU's religious benefits.
ARTHA: Occupants of a house should be
strong economically. A new house must bestow its occupants with
wealth and not with a curse of penury. If such things happen i.e.
a man loses his wealth in a new house, it should be inferred then,
that VAASTU of the house is faulty. On the other hand, if a home
proves fortunate for a man, it shows the success of VAASTU.
KAMA: Following the religious path and
finding ways to earn money, a man can make efforts to fulfill his
desires like marrying and having a happy family.
MOKSHA: This is the ultimate salvation
that every one longs for. If the family is happy, children grow
into successful citizens, duties of a man are said to be completed.
Now he has no worry and no cause for tension at the time of his
heavenly departure.
VAASTU is an indispensable means to achieve all of these four faculties.
